Oats and corn, oats and corn. All that dies will be reborn.
This is one of the more surreal events you may find yourself lucky enough to encounter in Crested Butte. A celebration of the fall harvest, a warning of the impending winter, and a metaphorical journey to expel negativity from your life, this week-long event filled with daily and nightly activities truly embodies the creativity and mythic nature of Crested Butte and it’s residents.
An opening ceremony invites the Harvest Mother (the most pregnant woman in town) to officially begin the festival. This is followed by nightly activities such as storytelling, Liar’s Night, crowning the Green Man (the most preposterously single bachelor in town, who also represents the rebirth of life following winter) a town feast provided by Mountain Oven Organic Bakery, and finally culminates with putting the Grump on trial and burning all the negativity associated with him via an enormous bonfire in the middle of town.
This does not begin to explain Vinotok. We could discuss other aspects of these events involving, knights, Gaia, and dragons, but these things cannot simply be explained; they must be experienced. Stay at our International Hostel and be blocks from the action at any given time.
